  2. 'The meaning of the Portuguese proverb «From Spain, neither a good wind nor a good marriage» 'In Portugal, the sea softens the climate, but because Spain is continental and mountainous, easterly winds in winter are often unpleasant. Also during the summer, the wind from North Africa, called suão, reaches Portugal after crossing the south of Spain. For these reasons, easterly winds are drier and more severe than oceanic winds. As for the sequence in which it is said "not a good marriage", this is a historical allusion, due to some unsuccessful marriages between the crowns of Spain and Portugal, which, for this country, resulted in compromising political independence. Because of the desire to maintain our cultural identity and seek some security in such an adventurous matter, we prefer marriages with our neighbors, sons and daughters of well-known families.
